A CPU meter tells you the machine is busy. It never tells you what is making it busy, which is the only part you can do anything about — so the fan spins up and you open Task Manager to find out. Top Process skips that step and puts the name of the biggest consumer on the taskbar, with its share beside it and the name as the headline rather than the number. Underneath runs a live trace of the last few minutes, because the useful question about a hog is rarely how big it is but whether it's a spike or something that has run away.
